Recently, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has made a significant breakthrough by successfully developing the first drilling VFD control system in China. The system has passed both communication and software testing and has now been installed on the "Zhenhai No. 2" drilling platform. This achievement marks a major milestone, as it signifies that CCCC has broken the long-standing foreign technology monopoly and become the fourth company worldwide—and the first in China—to fully master the drilling VFD control system technology.
The drilling VFD control system is one of the two critical control systems in the drilling process, alongside the drilling control system. It serves as an essential "emergency backup" system. In the event of a failure in the main drilling control system, the VFD system can quickly take over, preventing major downhole incidents and significantly enhancing the safety and stability of offshore drilling operations.
Currently, this advanced technology is dominated by three global drilling suppliers, which has left domestic drilling platforms at a disadvantage in terms of pricing and commissioning timelines. In contrast, the VFD control system developed independently by CCCC offers a more user-friendly interface and more comprehensive functionality, making it a competitive alternative to foreign counterparts.
This successful development not only strengthens the technical foundation for building domestic drilling platforms but also enables pre-commissioning of key equipment such as winches, top drives, and mud pumps. As a result, it helps reduce construction costs and improves project efficiency, further supporting the growth of China’s offshore drilling industry.
