Recently, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has made a significant breakthrough by successfully developing the first domestically produced drilling VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) control system in China. The system has passed both communication and software testing, and is now installed on the "Zhenhai No. 2" drilling platform. This achievement marks a major milestone, as CCCC has broken the long-standing foreign technology monopoly and become the fourth company worldwide—and the first in China—to fully master the drilling VFD control system technology.
The drilling VFD control system plays a critical role in offshore drilling operations, acting as an essential emergency backup for the main drilling control system. In the event of a failure in the primary control system, the VFD system can quickly take over to prevent potential downhole accidents, significantly enhancing the safety and reliability of drilling activities. Currently, this advanced technology is dominated by three international drilling equipment suppliers, which has left domestic operators at a disadvantage in terms of pricing and commissioning timelines.
In comparison with similar foreign systems, CCCC’s independently developed VFD control system offers a more user-friendly interface and enhanced functionality. This innovation not only strengthens the technical foundation for building domestic drilling platforms but also enables pre-commissioning of key equipment such as winches, top drives, and mud pumps. As a result, it helps reduce construction costs and improves overall project efficiency. With this breakthrough, China is taking a major step forward in achieving technological self-reliance in the offshore drilling industry.
