City high-rise hidden personal protective equipment necessary

In recent years, the skyline of Liuzhou has been rapidly changing with the rise of towering skyscrapers. Among them, a 303-meter-tall building stands as the tallest in Guangxi. According to fire department data, there are currently five high-rise buildings over 100 meters tall in the city, with 18 more under construction. Over 880 buildings exceed 24 meters in height. As the number of high-rises increases, so do the associated risks. On June 14th, a fire broke out on the 13th floor of a high-rise in the Classic Age complex, requiring fire trucks with 32-meter and 53-meter ladders to respond. What should people do if a fire occurs in a high-rise above 20 floors? And what other hidden dangers exist beyond fires? Recently, a reporter visited one of Liuzhou’s tallest buildings to explore safety measures and solutions. The Fire Prevention Department of the Liuzhou Fire Fighting Brigade explained that high-rise buildings are being constructed at a much faster pace than the development of firefighting equipment. Most fire departments in the city have ladders reaching only 32 meters, with the highest being 53 meters—equivalent to about 17 floors. If a taller building catches fire, rescue equipment may be unable to reach it effectively. Therefore, it's crucial for the public to understand basic self-rescue techniques. At the Liushajiao project, a mixed-use high-rise with 25, 27, and 31 floors, the property manager, Ma Kangwu, guided the reporter through the building. The facility is equipped with advanced fire detection systems. At the lobby, a fire display panel is connected to smoke detectors on each floor. When smoke is detected, the panel shows the exact location of the fire, while lights in the control room activate. Sprinklers and laser alarm bells are installed on every corridor ceiling. These systems automatically activate when temperatures reach 60–80°C, releasing water or triggering alarms. In case of confirmed fire, staff can press a confirmation button in the control room, activating all alarms, broadcasting alerts, and starting rooftop fans to reduce smoke levels. Each floor also has fire extinguishers, hydrants, and pressure pumps to ensure sufficient water pressure. To maintain security, electronic patrol points are placed on every floor and in the underground parking lot. Security guards use a handheld device to scan these points during patrols, and the data is stored for weekly review. However, some residents still place items in fire escape routes, such as stairwells, and even use electric scooters to move up and down via elevators. “If a fire breaks out, it would be extremely dangerous,” said Ms. Liu, expressing her concerns. Property managers have implemented safety protocols and regularly remind residents to keep corridors clear. They emphasize the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a safe environment. For buildings over 100 meters, refuge floors are required by Chinese fire codes. These floors are designed to provide temporary shelter for evacuees and help mitigate the impact of fires. They are made of non-flammable materials and include ventilation systems to improve air quality. Liuzhou’s 47-story residential buildings feature refuge floors at specific intervals, and the Diwang International Wealth Center, which exceeds 300 meters, also includes designated escape areas. These floors are equipped with emergency exits, sprinklers, and communication systems to aid in safe evacuation. Experts advise residents to prepare essential tools for emergencies, such as fireproof towels, flashlights, and descent devices. A descent device, consisting of hooks, ropes, and speed controllers, allows individuals to safely descend from high floors during a fire. These devices can be purchased online or at local fire equipment stores, with prices ranging from tens to hundreds of yuan. While earthquakes are rare in Liuzhou, residents remain concerned about seismic risks. Experts warn that improper renovation, such as removing load-bearing walls or drilling into them, can weaken a building’s structural integrity. In the event of an earthquake, it is recommended to avoid elevators and immediately move to an open area. Additionally, falling objects from high buildings pose a serious threat. Windstorms have caused glass and air conditioning units to fall, endangering people below. Property management ensures that air conditioners are installed properly and sets standards for balcony and window installations. Residents who violate these rules are given time to correct their mistakes. Overall, while high-rise buildings offer modern living, they also come with unique challenges. Awareness, preparation, and responsible behavior are key to ensuring safety in these structures.
