In recent years, the skyline of Liuzhou has been rapidly changing with the emergence of towering high-rise buildings. Among them, one skyscraper standing at 303 meters has become the tallest in Guangxi. According to fire department statistics, there are five high-rises over 100 meters in the city, with 18 more currently under construction. In addition, over 880 buildings exceed 24 meters in height. As the number of high-rises continues to grow, so do the potential safety risks.
On June 14th, a fire broke out on the 13th floor of a high-rise building called "Classic Age." Firefighters had to use vehicles equipped with 32-meter and 53-meter ladders to reach the scene. But what should people do if a fire occurs in a high-rise building with more than 20 floors? And what other hidden dangers exist besides fires?
Recently, a reporter visited a high-rise in Liuzhou to explore these concerns. The head of the Fire Prevention Department from the Liuzhou Firefighting Brigade explained that high-rises are growing too fast, far outpacing the development of firefighting equipment. Most of the city’s fire trucks can only reach up to 32 meters, with the highest being 53 meters—equivalent to about 17 floors. If a taller building catches fire, rescue equipment may be unable to reach it effectively. Therefore, public awareness of self-rescue is crucial in such situations.
At the Liushajiao project, a mixed-use building with 25, 27, and 31 floors, the property manager, Ma Kangwu, led the reporter through the complex. Each floor is equipped with advanced fire protection systems. Smoke detectors are connected to a central fire display panel, which immediately alerts staff to the exact location of a fire. Sprinklers and laser alarm bells are installed throughout the corridors, activating automatically when temperatures rise between 60°C and 80°C.
If a fire is confirmed, the staff can trigger alarms, activate the building’s emergency broadcast, and start the rooftop fan to reduce smoke concentration. Fire extinguishers, hydrants, and hoses are available on every floor, along with pressure pumps to ensure adequate water pressure. Security guards also perform regular patrols using electronic devices that record their movements, ensuring no area is overlooked.
However, not all residents are as cautious. Some have placed items in fire escape routes, while others use elevators to bring electric scooters into stairwells. “If a fire breaks out, it will be very hard to escape,†said Ms. Liu, who expressed her concern.
The property management has implemented a systematic plan to address these issues, including regular inspections and warnings to residents. They encourage everyone to take responsibility for creating a safer environment.
For super high-rises over 100 meters, refuge floors are designed to provide temporary shelter during emergencies. These floors are built with fire-resistant materials and feature ventilation systems to maintain air quality. The Diwang International Wealth Center, which stands over 300 meters tall, includes multiple refuge floors for safe evacuation.
Fire officials emphasize that refuge floors must be equipped with fire elevators, automatic sprinklers, and emergency lighting to help people escape safely.
In terms of personal preparedness, experts recommend that families keep basic fire safety tools at home: wet towels, flashlights, and descent devices. A descent device, consisting of hooks, ropes, and speed controllers, allows individuals to slowly lower themselves down during an emergency. These devices are available online and in local fire equipment stores, with prices ranging from tens to hundreds of yuan.
Even for earthquakes, though Liuzhou is not a major seismic zone, residents still worry about the risks. Experts advise against dismantling load-bearing walls during renovation, as this can weaken a building’s structural integrity. During an earthquake, it is safest to avoid elevators and move to open areas.
Additionally, falling objects from high buildings pose a serious threat. Loose glass or air-conditioning units can become dangerous projectiles. Residents are encouraged to install air conditioners properly and avoid unsafe placements. Property managers have set strict guidelines for balcony and window installations to prevent such hazards.
In conclusion, while high-rises offer modern convenience, they also require increased vigilance and preparation. From fire safety to earthquake readiness, residents must stay informed and proactive in protecting themselves and their communities.
