Faucet "lead shadow" incident Supor bathroom was suspected behind the scenes

In a recent shocking development, a report titled “Faucet Lead Shadow” has implicated nine major global and Chinese sanitary ware brands, including Jiumu, Hengjie, Lejia, Moen, and GROHE, in a "toxic leader" scandal. These companies had previously passed quality inspections by the Shanghai Bureau of Quality Supervision, yet they now claim to be victims of malicious framing by competitors. Behind the scenes, speculation has pointed to Supor, a brand promoting "lead-free" stainless steel taps, as a possible culprit. The controversy began when an investigation by Shanghai TV’s “One-seventh” program revealed that 9 out of 13 faucet samples tested contained lead levels exceeding national standards. American Standard, Shenluda, and Chaoyang Sanitary Ware had only slightly higher lead content, while Moen, Deta, and others exceeded limits by two to six times. Notably, Jiumu and GROHE saw lead levels 18 times over the standard, with Lejia reaching an alarming 173 µg/L—34 times above the limit. This is not just a minor issue. Experts warn that excessive lead in tap water can cause serious health risks, such as kidney stones and lead poisoning, comparable in danger to melamine contamination. The scandal has shaken industry giants, with many brands scrambling to defend their reputations. Several leading brands have issued statements denying the findings, calling the test results unreliable. They argue that differences in testing methods and standards may explain the discrepancies. For instance, Jiumu claims the results were from an unofficial source, while Lejia accused the report of being fabricated. Moen even requested detailed documentation from East China University of Science and Technology, the institution behind the tests. Interestingly, the Shanghai Quality Supervision Department recently confirmed that all these brands had passed spot checks and were listed as qualified. This contradiction has left consumers confused about whether the faucets are truly "toxic." Amid the chaos, Supor has emerged as a likely suspect. A company insider told the Beijing Business Daily that the incident might be a deliberate setup by a rival, possibly to undermine larger competitors. Supor, which recently launched its first stainless steel faucet store in Beijing with a "lead-free" marketing campaign, has been accused of playing a behind-the-scenes role. However, Su Zengfu, chairman of Supor Group, denied the allegations, stating, “This is just nonsense. We only focus on our own work.” Industry observers suggest that while some may be trying to shift blame, the real solution lies in maintaining high-quality standards. If brands like Jiumu and Lejia are truly committed to quality, they should not be vulnerable to such attacks. Ultimately, transparency and accountability will be key in restoring consumer trust.
