A variety of reasons, such as raw material price increases, have caused furniture prices to rise

In recent months, furniture prices in major cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the Pearl River Delta have seen a significant upward trend. This increase is driven by multiple factors, including rising raw material costs, reduced export tax rebates for furniture, and higher labor and sales expenses. As a result, products such as **beds**, **mattresses**, and **sofas** have experienced notable price hikes. Compared to the same period last year, the cost of raw materials and labor has gone up by 10% to 30%, pushing ex-factory prices of various furniture grades to new levels. Many consumers have noticed that while store prices haven’t changed much, promotional discounts have become less frequent. Manufacturers are also feeling the pressure. While last year’s price increases were more subtle—mainly reflected in fewer discounts—this year's rise is more visible across most furniture categories. According to industry reports, wooden furniture prices have increased by over 10% compared to the same time last year. Furniture manufacturers, particularly in the Pearl River Delta, are planning to adjust their pricing again in September and October to cope with rising material costs, expecting an additional 10% to 15% increase. Wang Li, executive secretary general of the Dongguan Famous Furniture Club, mentioned that some smaller furniture companies have already shut down due to the mounting pressure. Labor costs, which are a significant part of the furniture industry, have also risen sharply. With the implementation of the new “Labor Contract Law” at the start of this year, companies must now cover five types of social insurance for employees, including pensions, unemployment, work injury, maternity, and medical benefits. This has significantly increased operational costs, squeezing already thin profit margins. Industry experts believe that wood shortages and continued price hikes in the next decade will be the norm, putting immense pressure on the domestic furniture sector. Zhu Changling, vice chairman of the China Furniture Association, stated, “With limited resources and rising material costs, it's inevitable that furniture and household product prices will continue to climb.” Retailers are also adapting to these changes. Major furniture stores have raised ex-factory prices by 15% to 20% due to rising material and labor costs. Mattresses, sofas, and home accessories have seen the most significant price increases. However, retail prices in major stores have remained relatively stable compared to the previous year. To attract customers during peak periods like July and August, many stores have launched promotional campaigns. Some have even introduced combined sales strategies to help absorb the cost increases while maintaining customer interest. Large furniture retailers have also implemented strict pricing controls to prevent unfair practices such as “fictitious high pricing + ultra-low discounts.” Any violations are swiftly addressed, ensuring a fairer market environment for both businesses and consumers.
