Nanjing accelerates the creation of a smart city

Nanjing is accelerating its efforts to build a smart city, with the first phase of the Nanjing Smart Public Transportation System officially launched recently. This project includes one bid section—A1—and covers a wide range of tasks such as software development (including full system integration), building decoration (with integrated wiring), procurement of terminal equipment for pilot projects, and "Qingao" passenger transportation support. It also involves the purchase of regional coordination and dispatch center network equipment, multimedia tools, and office and living furniture. The total investment in the intelligent public transportation system is approximately 150 million yuan, with the first phase costing 83.5 million yuan. The project is expected to be completed by the end of next June. The system will consist of several key components, including a data center, a government emergency command and supervision system, an enterprise safety production and operation dispatch system, and an intelligent public platform. It will support 35,000 vehicle dispatch terminals, 35,000 electronic monitoring devices, 1,000 digital bus stops, 200 stations, and 500 mid-route electronic monitoring units, enabling millions of citizens to access real-time information through multiple channels. Traffic safety, congestion, and pollution are three major challenges facing global transportation systems, with traffic safety being the most critical issue. By applying intelligent transportation technologies, road management can be significantly improved, potentially reducing annual traffic-related deaths by over 30% and increasing transportation efficiency by more than 50%. Many developed countries have already invested heavily in large-scale research and implementation of intelligent traffic systems. These systems are now moving from testing to full deployment, marking them as the future direction of transportation development in the 21st century. Such systems can enhance the utilization of existing roads by 15% to 30%. With continuous advancements in sensor technology, communication systems, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), 3S technology (remote sensing, GIS, GPS), and computer science, the way traffic information is collected has evolved from manual methods to multi-source, integrated systems. Research on traffic information processing has deepened globally, with technologies like statistical analysis, artificial intelligence, data fusion, and parallel computing increasingly applied. This has led to continuous innovation in traffic data processing, better meeting the needs of ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) administrators and users.
