MIT and Samsung develop unlimited-life rechargeable batteries

The battery is the biggest short board of today's high-tech products. In order to be able to use it during the day, smart phones and other devices usually need to be charged every night. In addition, the battery also has limitations on the number of charge and discharge times and overheating and other security risks. Now, researchers at MIT and Samsung have published a paper in the journal Nature Materials, finding a way to develop a highly safe rechargeable battery with an infinite lifetime.

Their method is to replace the current liquid electrolyte commonly used in batteries with solid electrolyte, which greatly improves safety, battery storage and life.

Gerbrand Ceder, a materials science and engineering professor who is one of the authors of the paper, said that the solid-state electrolyte is revolutionary and can solve most of the battery problems, including life, safety, and cost.

Sulfate, a compound consisting of sulfate ions (SO42 -) and other metal ions, are electrolytes and most of them are soluble in water.

Sulphate mineral is a kind of salt which is composed of metal element cation (including ammonium) and sulfate.
