After two months of decline in fertilizer production in July and August, China’s fertilizer output rebounded in September, signaling a positive shift in the industry. According to recent data, the country produced 6.953 million tons of chemical fertilizers in September, marking a 2.26% year-on-year increase. From January to September, total chemical fertilizer output reached 60.462 million tons, up 6.13% compared to the same period last year.
Looking at different types of fertilizers, potash production saw the strongest growth. In September, the nation produced 608,400 tons of potash, a 5.28% rise from the previous year. Cumulative potash output from January to September reached 4.544 million tons, up 13.55%. Nitrogen fertilizer production also grew steadily, with 4.446 million tons produced in September, a 3.52% increase year-on-year. The cumulative nitrogen output for the first nine months was 40.463 million tons, up 6.71%.
Phosphate fertilizer, however, continued to face challenges, recording its fifth consecutive month of negative growth. Production fell by 1.51% in September, but the rate of decline has eased compared to earlier months, when it exceeded 3%.
The overall increase in fertilizer output can be attributed to the expansion of new production capacity. In recent years, strong demand and high profit margins led to the development of numerous new fertilizer projects nationwide. Many of these have now come online, offsetting the impact of some older facilities that were shut down due to low prices this year.
Additionally, as autumn approaches, fertilizer demand typically rises, prompting manufacturers to ramp up production in preparation for the peak season. This strategic adjustment in September helped boost output further. With favorable market conditions and increased production efficiency, the fertilizer sector is showing signs of recovery and stability.
