Furniture design is an essential part of lifestyle

The 2013 China Furniture Design Conference recently took place at the Kerry Center in Shanghai. Organized by the China Furniture Association and the China Interior Decoration Association, with support from Shanghai Bohua International Exhibition Co., Ltd. and the Shanghai Interior Decoration Industry Association, the event brought together over 500 industry leaders to discuss the latest trends in home design. The conference focused on the intersection of fashion, lifestyle, and furniture design, offering a platform for professionals to exchange ideas and explore new directions. Industry experts believe that the conference serves as a crucial communication channel for the furniture design sector. It helps participants stay updated on market trends, connect with key players, and gain insights into the future of the industry. With its focus on innovation and collaboration, the conference has become an essential event for those shaping the direction of Chinese furniture design. Chen Baoguang, deputy chairman of the China Furniture Association, highlighted that design remains a critical area needing improvement in the industry. Unlike tangible investments, design is a more subtle and long-term effort. He emphasized the importance of integrating design with culture and societal progress, noting that the association is increasingly focusing on promoting furniture and interior design at a national level. This year’s conference featured prominent speakers such as Zhu Hanwei, Lin Zhenzhong, Lai Yanan, and Chu Manlu. Their discussions provided valuable perspectives on how color, functionality, and aesthetics can elevate both furniture and interior design. Lin Zhenzhong, a renowned American interior designer, stressed the power of color in expressing the value and style of furniture, suggesting that designers should be "lascivious" in their approach—meaning bold and expressive. Lai Yanan, founder of the well-known brand DOMO Nature, spoke about the role of design in creating a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. She emphasized that good design should be integrated into everyday life, not just seen as a profession or niche field. Her vision includes elements like health, freedom, comfort, and sustainability—core values that define modern living. Chu Manlu, editorial director of *ELLE DECORATION Home Gallery*, shared global design trends, highlighting the growing influence of nature, mobility, sensory experiences, and shifting values. She noted that while trends may come and go, true design trends reflect broader changes in society and human behavior. Overall, the conference offered a rich exchange of ideas, inspiring designers to think more deeply about their work and embrace international influences. It marked an important step toward aligning Chinese furniture design with global standards, fostering innovation, and enhancing the overall quality of home environments. (Editor: Peter)
