Furniture design is an essential part of lifestyle

The 2013 China Furniture Design Conference recently took place at the Kerry Center in Shanghai. Organized by the China Furniture Association and the China Interior Decoration Association, and supported by Shanghai Bohua International Exhibition Co., Ltd. and the Shanghai Interior Decoration Industry Association, the event focused on "fashion and lifestyle in home design." Over 500 industry leaders from furniture manufacturing and design attended, making it a significant gathering for professionals in the field. The conference provided a professional and authoritative platform for the furniture design industry, helping participants stay updated with the latest trends, integrate resources, and engage with top experts both within and outside the sector. It offered a comprehensive review of the development of Chinese furniture design and set a direction for its future growth. Chen Baoguang, deputy chairman of the China Furniture Association and one of the organizers, highlighted that while the furniture industry has grown rapidly, design remains a key area for improvement. He emphasized that design is not just about aesthetics but is deeply connected to cultural and societal progress. The association is now focusing more on promoting furniture design, including interior design, from a national perspective. This year’s conference featured renowned speakers such as Zhu Hanwei, Lin Zhenzhong, Lai Yanan, and Chu Manlu. Their insights and experiences provided valuable inspiration for designers looking to innovate and push boundaries in their work. Lin Zhenzhong, a registered professional interior designer from the American Interior Design Association, spoke about the importance of color in furniture design. He argued that color is the most cost-effective way to enhance the value of furniture and create visual impact. According to him, good color choices can elevate the overall experience of a space and make it more harmonious and stylish. Lai Yanan, founder of the well-known furniture brand DOMO Nature, emphasized that design should be integrated into everyday life. She described good design as a combination of health, freedom, pleasure, comfort, love, style, sentiment, and low-carbon living. These elements, she said, are essential for creating a better quality of life. Chu Manlu, editorial director of “ELLE DECORATION Home Gallery,” shared global design trends, highlighting how lifestyle changes influence design directions. She discussed trends such as the connection with nature, mobility, sensory experiences, and values. These trends reflect how people live and how design responds to those needs. Participants left the conference with new ideas, deeper insights, and a better understanding of international design movements. The event was seen as a valuable opportunity for domestic furniture designers to connect with global trends and improve their work. (Editor: Peter)
