Gem flower season management method

Gem Flower Seasonal Care Guide:

(1) In spring, it's best to place gem flowers on east, south, or west-facing balconies. Ensure they receive enough light, ideally on a sunny windowsill. During early spring when temperatures are low, the plant is in a semi-dormant state, so watering should be limited to keep the soil slightly dry. Once the temperature stabilizes above 10°C, you can repot your gem flower. The best time for repotting is between September and October. Use well-draining, loose sandy loam soil, and it’s recommended to sterilize the soil either by high-temperature treatment or sun exposure. Repotting is usually done every two years. Before repotting, stop watering for a few days to allow the soil to dry. Gently remove the plant from its pot, clean off all the old soil, trim any dead or damaged roots, and let the cut areas dry for 3–5 days. If the wounds are large, let them dry for 1–2 more days before planting. After replanting, place the plant in a partially shaded area and avoid watering for a couple of days. Then, water lightly after 2–3 days, keeping the soil slightly dry. As temperatures rise, the plant will start to grow again. Gradually increase watering, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid overwatering. Provide plenty of light and apply a small amount of fertilizer during the growing season. If there is heavy rain, reduce watering accordingly.

(2) During summer, gem flowers thrive on east, south, or west-facing balconies. They can tolerate direct sunlight, but too much intense light may cause the leaves to yellow and lose their ornamental appeal. To avoid this, place the plant in a spot that gets morning and evening sun, avoiding the hottest part of the day. When temperatures rise, growth slows down, so it’s important to control watering to prevent root rot caused by excessive moisture. As summer ends and temperatures cool, move the plant to a brighter location and gradually increase watering.

(3) Autumn is also ideal for east, south, or west-facing balconies. Place the gem flower in a well-lit, dry area, away from rain. Once the weather cools down, stop fertilizing. As it gets colder, reduce watering gradually until the soil is completely dry, allowing the plant to enter dormancy. When temperatures drop below 5°C, protect the plant from frost damage.

(4) In winter, gem flowers should be placed on east, south, or west-facing balconies. These plants are not cold-tolerant, so ensure the balcony stays above 5°C. During this time, the plant is in a semi-dormant state, so watering must be strictly controlled—keep the soil dry. Provide as much light as possible. If the balcony temperature rises above 10°C, the plant may begin to grow slowly, and you can water it moderately during this period.
