Maintenance advice for American country furniture
Common Issues and Maintenance Tips for Furniture 1. Temperature Effects Wooden furniture performs best in an environment with a temperature between 18°C and 24°C, and relative humidity of 35% to 40%. It's important to avoid placing your furniture near heat sources or air conditioning vents. Sudden changes in temperature can cause damage to the exposed parts of your furniture. Using humidifiers, fireplaces, or small heaters may lead to premature aging of the wood. 2. Humidity and Expansion In high humidity conditions, solid wood drawers may become difficult to open or close due to expansion. Although our designs include space for normal expansion, extreme conditions can still cause issues. To fix this, apply wax or paraffin on the edges of the drawer and slides. If humidity remains high for long periods, consider using a dehumidifier. When the air is dry, the drawers should return to their normal function. Minor cracks at joints are normal due to wood movement, but they won't affect the structural integrity of the furniture. We use interlocking dowels or traditional mortise and tenon joints along with special hardware to reinforce these areas. 3. Light Exposure Direct sunlight can harm the finish of your furniture. UV rays may cause fine cracks or discoloration. To protect your furniture, move it away from direct light or use curtains to block sunlight. Some wood types naturally darken over time, which is a natural process and not considered a defect. 4. Simple Repair and Decoration Minor damage to wooden furniture can be fixed with proper materials and careful attention. Small cracks can be filled with color-matching crayons or white wax for white furniture. Always test any repair method on an inconspicuous area first to avoid damaging the finish. 5. Fixing Scratches and Dents If the surface has minor scratches, use a color pen that matches the wood tone and gently draw along the grain. Wipe off excess color with a soft cloth. Apply furniture polish to protect the surface. For deeper scratches or dents, consult a professional furniture repair service. 6. Removing Water Marks Water marks often fade over time. If they don’t disappear after a month, try wiping them with a clean cloth dipped in a little salad oil or mayonnaise, working in the direction of the wood grain. 7. Dealing with Heat Marks Use a soft steel wool pad designed for furniture to gently rub the mark in the direction of the grain. You can also apply a small amount of salad oil or mayonnaise, then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Finish by applying a layer of furniture wax for added protection. Tip: High-quality furniture-grade steel wool can be purchased at hardware stores. Avoid using steel balls from pots or pans, as they may scratch the surface. Note: These methods work best for minor repairs. Results may vary depending on the type of furniture. Always test on a hidden spot first to ensure no damage occurs to the finish. 8. Keeping Your Furniture Level The doors and drawers of your furniture were adjusted to be level at the factory. Make sure to place your furniture on a flat surface at home. If needed, delivery staff can adjust the feet according to your floor conditions. When moving heavy items like TVs or computers, adjust the feet promptly to maintain balance. Otherwise, uneven weight distribution may cause doors or drawers to close improperly.
