Revealing the yellow wax stone fraud

Yellow wax stone has long been a prized item in Kistler's collection. The earliest excavated and most prestigious variety was Chaozhou Yellow Wax Stone. Later, Taishan Yellow Wax Stone gained fame, and this year, Yunnan Yellow Wax Stone also made its mark. Both Taishan and Yunnan varieties are considered "latecomers." In fact, Taishan Yellow Wax Stone was even renamed as "Taishan Jade," while Yunnan Yellow Wax Stone earned the title of "Yellow Dragon Jade." There are two main ways to collect yellow wax stone: as natural ornamental stones or as carved artworks. Collectors claim that with a good understanding of weight and color, one can easily distinguish real from fake yellow wax stone with the naked eye. Mr. Cao, a collector, explained that real yellow wax stone exhibits natural color transitions, which fake ones struggle to replicate. Additionally, resin-based fakes tend to be much lighter. “This kind of fraud is actually quite easy to detect,” he said. One quick and effective method is to use fire to test the authenticity. New forms of fraud continue to emerge. For instance, some merchants modify the shape of natural ornamental stones without any carving, just to enhance their appearance. A photo shows an example of such a modified piece. According to Mr. Cao, a collector from Chaozhou, “hands-on” techniques often involve using a jade polishing machine to alter the surface texture. **Be Wary: Soaking in Oxalic Acid to Brighten Color** Whether it's a natural ornamental stone or a carved piece, one of the most common methods of falsification is soaking the stone in oxalic acid to make its color more vibrant. Some even use coloring techniques similar to those used for emeralds. However, this practice is extremely harmful to yellow wax stone. As an expert explained, while the stone may look beautiful temporarily, the surface layer is damaged, leading to a loose texture and dry feel. “A stone with a tight structure can maintain its oiliness for a year, but one treated with oxalic acid needs constant oiling to retain its appearance.” **Mislabeling Heyuan Stone as Chaozhou Stone** Another common form of deception involves hiding cracks in the stone. For example, a high-quality yellow wax stone might sell for 10,000 yuan, while one with cracks could be worth only 5,000. However, these cracks are often not visible on the surface, and buyers might end up paying 12,000 yuan, suffering a big loss. A collector who once fell for this trick shared that after losing money, he learned to check the stone using a flashlight to see through it. Some merchants also glue broken pieces of yellow wax stone together, making it hard to detect. Another type of fraud requires more experience to identify. Mr. Cao warned that many beginners have fallen victim to this. He explained that different regions produce yellow wax stones with varying values. Some merchants take advantage by misrepresenting the origin. For example, Chaozhou Yellow Wax Stone, known for its large size, can cost at least 10,000 yuan. However, Heyuan, a nearby area, recently discovered stones with a similar texture, but they are sold for only 2,000–3,000 yuan. Many sellers try to pass off Heyuan stones as Chaozhou stones. Mr. Cao advised newcomers to rely on experienced collectors to avoid being deceived.
