Fuyang, Zhejiang, illegally extract refined copper brewing tragedy

A toxic gas leak occurred at Hangzhou Fuyang Longsheng Metal Products Co., Ltd., resulting in serious consequences. Six workers inside the factory were affected, and a nearby villager who was passing by also suffered from inhalation of the poisonous fumes. The incident has raised concerns about illegal operations and safety violations in the company. According to preliminary investigations, the cause of the accident was identified as an illegal operation. As of yesterday, six individuals are still receiving medical treatment, with four of them in critical condition. Local authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, working closely with environmental protection and safety inspection departments to determine the exact causes and handle the aftermath. The toxic gas involved in the incident is believed to be a mixture containing arsenic cyanide, a highly dangerous substance. Emergency teams rushed to the scene to rescue those affected, while experts worked to assess the environmental impact. The company’s production process, which involves extracting copper from slag, appears to have led to the release of hazardous gases due to poor ventilation and lack of proper safety measures. The Fuyang Longsheng Metal Products Co., Ltd. was registered as a company primarily engaged in processing hardware and mechanical parts, not in the extraction of slag or metal refining. However, local village officials revealed that the company had not followed proper procedures before starting its operations. According to regulations, companies must report their activities to the village committee, but this company failed to do so. Despite this, it was known that the company had been operating for some time before the accident. This type of poisoning, involving arsenic cyanide, is rare. Two years ago, a similar case occurred in Lanxi, where 10 people were hospitalized after being exposed to arsenic in a copper plant. All of them eventually recovered after intensive treatment. According to information provided by the company, the workers involved in the incident were part of the electrolysis workshop, where they used low current density and high-acid solutions to refine copper. This process generates harmful gases and acid mist. Safety regulations require all workers to wear appropriate gas masks when entering the copper transfer room. However, many employees did not follow these rules, leading to direct exposure and poisoning. The incident highlights serious lapses in safety protocols and regulatory compliance, raising questions about the oversight of industrial operations in the area. Authorities are now focusing on holding the responsible parties accountable and ensuring that such tragedies do not happen again.
