Home Feng Shui plant selection introduction

In the realm of home feng shui, plants play a significant role in balancing the yin and yang energies within a space. These living entities are believed to possess spiritual qualities that can positively influence all aspects of human life. As such, they are often used to harmonize the environmental energy field. With a wide variety of plant species, each having unique characteristics, it's essential to understand their specific effects when incorporating them into your living space. Professor Li Dexiong, Dean of the China National Studies Institute and an expert at the World Horticultural Exposition, along with Xia Jianbing, manager of Rural Landscape Design Engineering Co., Ltd., have shared insights on how to harness the power of plants for feng shui benefits. Plants, like everything in nature, are said to embody the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. According to Professor Li, understanding these elements can help you choose the right plants for your home. For example, green flowers and leaves represent the wood element, while white blossoms symbolize metal. Red signifies fire, blue represents water, and yellow is associated with earth. Additionally, you can identify the elemental nature of a plant by its growth habits—some thrive in heat, others in cool or dry conditions. When selecting potted plants for the living room, it’s important to consider the direction of the entrance. Each direction corresponds to different elements, and choosing the right plant can enhance the positive energy in the space, promoting health, wealth, and overall well-being. For a western-facing door, which aligns with the metal element, plants such as golden-tailed orchids, golden lilies, and Brazilian iron trees are recommended. These help support respiratory health and balance the body's organs. A southern-facing entrance, linked with fire, benefits from plants like dragon blood trees and red iron plants, which promote heart and stomach health, as well as emotional stability. For a northern-facing door, associated with water, plants like wine bottle orchids and Hawaiian coconuts are ideal for kidney and lung health. Eastern-facing entrances benefit from wood-element plants like rich bamboo, green yuan, and umbrella maple, which support liver and kidney function. In the bedroom, the choice of plants should be more thoughtful. Professor Li suggests focusing on beautiful flowers that can enhance romantic relationships. The selection can also be tailored based on the zodiac sign of the occupants. For instance, those born under the signs of the ox, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, or dog, especially those born in winter, may benefit from plants like Clivia, Camellia, and red roses. People with zodiac signs of the chicken or monkey may find soil and metal-based plants, such as yellow roses and tuberose, more suitable. Those born under the rat or pig signs, linked with water, may prefer plants like narcissus and white orchids. Rabbit and tiger signs, connected with wood, may benefit from plants like Qilan and evergreen. Xia Jianbing also emphasizes that bedrooms typically receive less natural light, so it’s best to choose low-maintenance plants such as camellias and Ledu. He adds that in spaces smaller than 20 square meters, it’s advisable to limit the number of potted plants to four or fewer for optimal health benefits.
