Spherical Roller Bearing Installation Plan

Spherical roller bearings are a type of bearing designed to handle heavy radial and axial loads. They feature two raceways on the inner ring and a spherical raceway on the outer ring, allowing for self-alignment. This makes them ideal for applications where shaft misalignment is likely, such as in heavy machinery or industrial equipment.

The design includes cylindrical rollers that are arranged in a drum shape, which helps distribute the load evenly. The center of curvature of the outer ring’s raceway matches the bearing's center, enabling the bearing to adjust automatically when the shaft and housing experience slight deflection. This self-aligning feature reduces wear and increases the lifespan of the bearing.

These bearings can be mounted directly onto a tapered bore or with an adapter sleeve if needed. The cage used in these bearings can be made from steel stamping, polyamide, or copper alloy, depending on the application requirements and environmental conditions.

When installing self-aligning bearings, it's important to use a centering device to prevent the outer ring from tilting or rotating during installation. Some bearings have balls that protrude slightly on the side, so the centering device should be recessed to avoid damaging the balls. Bearings are typically installed using mechanical or hydraulic press-fit methods.

For separable bearings, the inner and outer rings can be installed separately, which simplifies the assembly process—especially when both rings require an interference fit. When the inner ring is already in place, care must be taken to ensure that the outer ring is properly aligned to avoid damage to the raceways and rolling elements.

If you're using cylindrical or needle roller bearings, it's recommended to install the inner ring without a flange or rib. For bearings with a blue edge, a mounting sleeve should be used. The outer diameter of the sleeve should match the inner ring raceway, and the machining tolerance should be set to d10. For outer ring needle roller bearings, a mandrel is the best tool for installation.
