Recent findings from the Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association have sparked widespread concern over indoor air quality. According to their report, nearly 91.2% of homes in Shanghai exceed acceptable levels of formaldehyde during the summer months. This makes formaldehyde the primary culprit behind indoor air pollution in the region.

Currently, most decorative panels rely on urea-formaldehyde resins for adhesion. These resins often leave residual formaldehyde in the material, which slowly releases into the surrounding environment. As a result, formaldehyde remains one of the most significant contributors to pollution in home renovations. It’s colorless and emits a strong, pungent odor. Even when concentrations are low, it can be difficult to detect without specialized equipment. Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable to its effects, with symptoms ranging from allergic reactions like asthma to cognitive issues such as memory loss and difficulty concentrating.

Preventing formaldehyde exposure is no easy task.

Despite its dangers, avoiding formaldehyde contamination in home improvements proves challenging due to its ubiquitous presence. Formaldehyde doesn’t just come from items like plywood, blockboard, fiberboard, or particleboard used in interior design—it also lurks in various furniture types, including wooden panel furniture, fabric pieces, and kitchen cabinets. Even decorative materials like paints, adhesives, wallpapers, carpets, and curtains can harbor formaldehyde. Given how many household products utilize formaldehyde as a preservative or solvent, completely eradicating it at its source remains impractical.

In response to these challenges, the F4 Star Standard emerged as an innovative solution for achieving greener home renovations. Originating in Japan, this environmental benchmark represents the highest grade achievable under their stringent industrial regulations. Panels meeting this standard emit less than 0.3 mg/L of formaldehyde—a level significantly lower than conventional options. Leading Chinese flooring manufacturer Shengxiang Group has taken notice of this advancement. Committed to promoting sustainable practices, they plan to release a new line of health-focused products adhering to the F4 Star Standard. This move could redefine health benchmarks within the Chinese flooring industry.
