Hardware and electromechanical industry integrate resources to create a pilot economy

Currently, domestic private hardware and electrical machinery companies generally possess advanced equipment resources, and their technological applications are quite progressive. New technologies can be quickly adopted across the industry, spanning design and manufacturing to related material production and heat treatment processes, thus forming a complete industrial chain. This integration provides significant competitive advantages. However, many enterprises face challenges such as insufficient funding and a lack of brand recognition, which hinders their expansion. To address these issues, companies are increasing investments in management and technological upgrades, focusing more on producing high-end products while setting up domestic sales divisions to tap into the domestic market. Currently, the hardware and electrical machinery sector demonstrates robust competitiveness. Its primary strengths lie within private enterprises and traditional industries, with high technology being essential for entering the premium market. Recently, the Senior Technical School and the Modern Manufacturing Engineering Research Institute of Zhejiang University have collaborated to establish a rapid digital design and precision testing center for hardware and electromechanical equipment, aimed at supporting the local hardware and electrical industry. With the domestic hardware and electromechanical industry’s growth, competition among provinces has intensified. Disorderly competition within the hardware and electromechanical sector is becoming apparent, exposing weaknesses such as low-cost hardware, poor product structure, and limited technical sophistication. The hardware and electrical industry began to flourish in South China during the 1960s and peaked in the late 1980s. At that time, the entry barrier was minimal—purchasing old machinery for around 30,000 yuan was sufficient to start a small processing factory. Over four decades, numerous hardware and electromechanical processing enterprises have emerged, most being labor-intensive small businesses. There is now a pressing need to promote the circular economy pilot projects for the hardware and electrical industry, adhering to principles of reduction, reuse, and resource utilization. Focus should be placed on reducing resource consumption and waste discharge, actively implementing national policies for comprehensive resource utilization, and recycling items like used batteries, discarded home appliances, bamboo and wood processing residues, mining waste, sewage treatment sludge, and stainless steel processing waste. Developing an industrial recycling economy to promote cleaner production is a key aspect of the low-carbon economy. The hardware and electromechanical industry must shift away from its previous extensive development model, which focused on scaling up and increasing quantities, towards one that relies on technological progress and improving product quality and standards. This transition involves moving from a model based on introducing and digesting international advanced technologies to one that integrates this with enhancing independent innovation capabilities. The industry is evolving from skill-based characteristics to those emphasizing technology and modern enterprise management. Innovation-driven development methods should be promoted, fostering new growth areas. Efforts should also be made to develop modern manufacturing services, extending the upstream and downstream industrial chains centered around hardware and electromechanical manufacturing. Supporting the formation of industry clusters and ensuring a rational industrial layout will help create complementary advantages and optimize industrial structure development. In the future, the hardware and electrical machinery industry must continue to innovate and adopt advanced technologies to stay competitive. The collaboration between educational institutions and research institutes is a promising step forward. By leveraging such partnerships, the industry can enhance its global standing and achieve sustainable growth.
