Hardware and electromechanical industry integrate resources to create a pilot economy

Currently, domestic private enterprises specializing in hardware and electrical machinery possess state-of-the-art equipment and relatively advanced technological applications. These companies can swiftly adopt new technologies, fostering rapid progress within the industry. From design and manufacturing to material production and heat treatment, a complete industrial chain has been established, highlighting the significant benefits of integration. However, many hardware and electrical enterprises face challenges like insufficient funding and a lack of brand recognition. To address these issues, they plan to increase investments in management and technological upgrades, focusing on expanding the production of high-end products while setting up domestic sales divisions to aggressively tap into the domestic market. Presently, this sector exhibits strong competitiveness, with its primary strengths lying in private enterprises and traditional industries. Accessing the high-end market requires reliance on cutting-edge technology. Recently, the Senior Technical School and the Modern Manufacturing Engineering Research Institute of Zhejiang University have collaborated to establish a fast digital design and precision testing center for hardware and electromechanical purposes, aiming to support the local hardware and electrical industry. As the domestic hardware and electrical industry continues to grow, competition among different provinces has intensified. Unordered competition in the hardware and electrical sector has emerged, exposing weaknesses such as low-cost hardware, unbalanced product structures, and insufficient technical content. The hardware and electrical industry began to flourish in the South China Sea region in the 1960s, reaching its peak in the late 1980s. Back then, the entry barrier was minimal—buying some old equipment for around 30,000 yuan was enough to start a small-scale hardware and electrical processing factory. Over more than four decades of development, there are now over ten thousand hardware and electromechanical processing enterprises, most of which are labor-intensive small businesses. To promote sustainable development, we need to implement pilot projects for the circular economy of the hardware and electrical industry, adhering to principles of reduction, reuse, and resource utilization. This involves reducing resource consumption and waste discharge, implementing national policies for comprehensive resource utilization, and recycling waste batteries, discarded home appliances, used furniture, bamboo and wood processing residues, mining waste, sewage treatment plant sludge, and stainless steel processing waste. Developing the industrial recycling economy is a crucial aspect of the low-carbon economy. The hardware and electromechanical industry is shifting away from its previous extensive growth model, which focused primarily on scaling up and increasing output, toward a more efficient development model driven by technological advancements and improved product quality. This transformation moves away from merely introducing and absorbing international advanced technologies to a model that combines absorption with enhancing independent innovation capabilities. The industry is evolving from a skill-based characteristic to one with stronger technological and modern enterprise management features. Innovation-driven development should be actively promoted, and new growth areas should be carefully cultivated. It is essential to vigorously develop the modern manufacturing service industry, extending the upstream and downstream industrial chains centered around hardware and electromechanical manufacturing. Support the establishment of hardware and electrical industrial clusters, ensuring rational layouts that complement the hardware and electrical machinery manufacturing industry, and gradually form complementary advantages. Coordinating industrial structural development is critical to achieving balanced growth.
