Many people who love wallpaper often worry about one thing: Will it curl? Is it normal for all wallpapers to curl? The answer is no. Not every type of wallpaper will curl, and the likelihood depends largely on the material you choose.

Wallpapers are generally made from two main types of materials: PVC and pure paper. Among these, PVC wallpapers tend to be more prone to curling than their natural counterparts.

This happens because PVC wallpaper is made up of a layer of PVC film over a paper backing. While this gives it a textured feel, the layered structure can cause problems once it's applied to the wall. If moisture gets trapped between the layers during installation or due to humidity in the room, the paper base may expand while the PVC layer remains stable. This mismatch in expansion can lead to curling at the edges.

Additionally, PVC materials are more sensitive to temperature changes. As the temperature fluctuates, the PVC might contract or expand more than the paper backing, causing wrinkles or warping. Another issue with PVC wallpapers is that they aren’t breathable. This means any moisture left behind from the installation process or from the wall itself can get trapped, leading to bubbles, mold, or even peeling over time.

On the other hand, natural wood pulp or fiber-based wallpapers are much more flexible and responsive to environmental changes. These wallpapers are made from wood fibers and natural paper, which expand and contract in harmony with the surrounding temperature and humidity. Their breathability allows moisture to escape naturally, reducing the risk of curling, bubbling, or mold growth.

So, if you're looking for a long-lasting and low-maintenance option, consider choosing a natural fiber or paper-based wallpaper. It not only looks better but also performs better in the long run, especially in areas with high humidity or frequent temperature changes.
