Sowing: Spinach is typically sown in sandy soil, but it can also be broadcast. In high-temperature conditions, where germination is slow, it's recommended to pre-soak the seeds before sowing in early autumn. The seeds should be soaked for 12 hours, then placed in a refrigerator at 4°C for 24 hours to promote germination. After that, they should be kept at a temperature between 15°C and 25°C for several days until sprouting. Once germinated, the seeds can be spread directly. The seeding rate is generally around 10 kilograms per acre. After sowing, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or apply diluted manure water, and place straw or melon vines on top to lower the ground temperature and maintain soil moisture. If sowing occurs after the first ten days of September, the germination process may not be necessary, and the seeding rate can be reduced to 5 to 7.5 kilograms per mu. This helps save costs while still ensuring good growth. Field Management: The main focus during field management is proper fertilization and irrigation. Before planting, it's important to apply base fertilizer, usually in the form of well-rotted manure or compost. Top dressing can be done in combination with irrigation. When the seedlings are young, use a diluted solution of human excrement, and as the plants grow and temperatures drop, the concentration can be gradually increased. Spinach is usually harvested in multiple stages. After each harvest, additional fertilizer should be applied to support new growth. Early in the growing season, regular weeding is essential, and attention should be given to controlling pests such as mites. Harvesting: Autumn spinach leaves typically reach a length of more than 15 cm. Harvesting should begin when the plants become crowded, and it is usually done every 20 days. This allows for consistent production and ensures the quality of the leaves remains high throughout the season. By following these steps, farmers can ensure a successful spinach crop, even in challenging weather conditions. Proper planning, timely watering, and careful monitoring of plant health are key to maximizing yield and quality.
