Wu Yuyu cultivation skills

Wu Yuyu Cultivation Tips:

Wu Yuyu, also known as the "Jade Plant," thrives best when planted in deep pots. The soil should be loose, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. It can be grafted onto rootstocks like grass balls or Wolongzhu to promote healthy growth. Be cautious of red spider infestations, especially during hot and dry weather.

This plant prefers warm, dry, and sunny conditions but is sensitive to waterlogging, drought, and excessive shade. A significant temperature difference between day and night is ideal for its growth.

In spring and autumn, the swollen roots are particularly vulnerable to overwatering. During the growing season, keep the soil slightly moist, but reduce watering in other periods. Watering should follow the principle of “not too dry, not too wet.” Avoid letting water sit in the pot, as this can lead to root rot. Long-term dryness may cause slow or stunted growth, with wrinkled and dull skin. During dormancy, it's important to avoid both overwatering and over-fertilizing.

Some growers use a plastic bottle to cover the plant’s sphere to maintain humidity. While this keeps the surface clean and moist, it can lead to rust due to poor air circulation. To prevent this, you can regularly spray a solution of carbendazim or powder rust fungicide.

Apply a diluted organic liquid fertilizer or a "low nitrogen, high phosphorus, potassium" compound fertilizer every month. Make sure not to let the fertilizer come into contact with the plant’s body, as this can cause damage.

During the summer, when temperatures rise, the plant grows more slowly. Ensure good ventilation to avoid stagnant, humid conditions that can attract pests like red spiders, rust, or stem rot. Provide some shade to protect the plant from direct sunlight, which can burn the fleshy parts.

In winter, place the plant in a location with plenty of sunlight. The minimum nighttime temperature should be around 10°C, with a noticeable temperature difference between day and night. You can water it normally if the temperature remains above 10°C. If the temperature drops below 10°C, reduce watering to encourage dormancy, and ensure it stays above 5°C for safe winter survival.

Wu Yuyu has a long, straight root system, so it's best to use deep pots. Repot annually to refresh the soil and maintain good drainage. The potting mix should be loose, fertile, and well-ventilated. It should have a granular texture and contain some calcareous material. A good mix includes 2 parts of humus soil or turf soil, 3 parts of coarse sand, and a small amount of bone meal, shell powder, or similar materials. Some gardeners mix in red jade soil, blue stone, or other minerals along with a slow-release compound fertilizer, which yields excellent results. Due to its large fleshy roots, always add a layer of tiles or gravel at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
