Wu Yuyu cultivation skills
Wu Yuyu Cultivation Tips: Wu Yuyu, also known as the "Jade Ball Cactus," is a unique and beautiful plant that requires careful attention to its growing conditions. It thrives in deep pots with well-draining soil that is loose and airy. For best results, grafting can be done using grass balls or specific rootstocks like Wolongzhu and Zhushi Wolongzhu. Be cautious of red spider infestations, especially during hot seasons. This plant prefers warm, dry, and sunny environments. It does not tolerate waterlogging, excessive moisture, drought, or too much shade. A significant temperature difference between day and night is beneficial for its growth. In spring and autumn, the thick roots are particularly sensitive to overwatering. During the growing season, keep the soil slightly moist, but reduce watering during other times. Water only when necessary—avoid both overwatering and letting the soil completely dry out. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while prolonged dryness may cause slow or stunted growth, wrinkled skin, and dull appearance. During dormancy, it's important to control watering and stop fertilizing. Some growers use plastic bottles to cover the plant to maintain humidity, but this can lead to poor air circulation and increase the risk of rust. To prevent this, regularly spray with carbendazim or a fungicide to keep the plant healthy. Apply a diluted organic liquid fertilizer or a "low nitrogen, high phosphorus, potassium" compound fertilizer every month. Avoid getting any fertilizer on the ball-like body of the plant, as it can cause damage. During summer, when temperatures rise, the plant grows more slowly. Ensure good ventilation, avoid humid and dry conditions, and watch out for pests like red spiders, rust, or stem rot. Provide some shade to protect the plant from direct sunlight, which can scorch the surface. In winter, place the plant in a well-lit indoor area. The minimum nighttime temperature should be around 10°C, with a noticeable temperature difference between day and night. If the temperature stays above 5°C, you can continue normal watering to support growth. If it drops below 10°C, reduce watering to induce dormancy and ensure the plant survives safely. Wu Yuyu has a large, straight root system, so it's essential to use deep pots. Repot annually to refresh the soil. The potting mix should be loose, fertile, and well-draining. It should have some coarse texture and contain a small amount of calcareous material. A good mix includes 2 parts of humus soil or turf soil, 3 parts of coarse sand, and a small amount of bone meal, shell powder, or similar additives. Some gardeners mix in red jade soil, blue stone, or other materials along with slow-release compound fertilizer, which yields excellent results. Because of its large fleshy roots, it’s important to ensure proper drainage at the bottom of the pot. You can add tiles or coarse gravel to the base to prevent water from sitting and causing root issues.
