The difference between rosewood and black red rosewood

Understanding the Difference Between Rosewood and Black Red Rosewood:

One of the most noticeable differences between rosewood and black red rosewood lies in their weight. Rosewood, which belongs to the genus Pterocarpus, is generally lighter and softer, often floating in water. The air-dried density of seven types of rosewood—such as Chongqing rosewood, Andaman rosewood, Hedgehog rosewood, Indian rosewood, Big Fruit Rosewood, Sacred Rosewood, and Bird Foot Rosewood—ranges from 0.53 to 1.01 grams per cubic centimeter (with an average of 0.79 to 0.91 g/cm³). In contrast, red rosewood sinks in water, with seven varieties like Bali Dalbergia, Saizhou Dalbergia, Sian Rosewood, Fluff Dalbergia, D. sylvestris, D. serrata, and Dalbergia sinensis having a dry density of 0.90 to 1.22 g/cm³ (average 1.02 to 1.14 g/cm³). Black rosewood also sinks in water, with eight types including Knife-shaped Black Rosewood, Broad-leaved Rosewood, Lushi Black Rosewood, East African Black Rosewood, Brazilian Black Rosewood, Amazon Yellow Tan, and Belize Dalbergia showing a density range of 0.82 to 1.33 g/cm³ (average 0.92 to 1.06 g/cm³).

Another key difference is the fluorescence observed when wood dust is soaked in water. When rosewood shavings are placed in water, they produce more noticeable fluorescence—especially bird's eye rosewood and red sandalwood. However, red rosewood and black rosewood do not exhibit this effect.

Smell is another distinguishing factor. Rosewood has a distinct spicy fragrance, while red and black rosewoods tend to have a stronger acidic scent.

Visually, rosewood typically has a more diffuse or semi-ring-porous structure, whereas red and black rosewoods are usually loose-porous, with no visible semi-ring pores.

In terms of color, rosewood ranges from reddish-brown to purple-red, with a relatively uniform appearance. Its ray tissue is homomorphic and usually appears in single rows. On the other hand, red and black rosewood also show colors ranging from reddish-brown to purple-red or even black, but they often have dark streaks. Their ray tissue is more pronounced, typically appearing in two rows, with fewer instances of single-ray structures.
